Reclaiming Your Identity: How to Choose Yourself & Return to Energetic Sovereignty

Buckle up, SoulFriend. Today we're getting personal.

Recently, I woke up to one of those cryptic emails that leaves you asking, "What is this even supposed to mean?" There were no clear accusations, just vague energy that felt off. What shook me most was the random scripture that was included: John 8:44-47. If you’re familiar with it, you can probably imagine my reaction. It was jarring to see my character, my identity, and my spirit silently challenged with words that felt so far from who I know myself to be.

But here’s the thing: life will always present us with these moments. Moments when we are misunderstood, mislabeled, and misrepresented by people who, at one point, knew us well. Or thought they did.

What do you do when someone decides to see you as someone you are not?

You Choose To Remember Who You Are. You Reclaim Your Identity.

That morning, I had two choices: accept the distorted perception being projected onto me or anchor deeper into the truth of who I am.

Thankfully, I was in Chicago with one of my best friends. We were supposed to be catching up, exploring the city, and feeding our joy. But in that moment, she became my anchor. Without skipping a beat, she called out the energy for what it was and reminded me of who I am. And that reminder changed everything.

I share this story to speak truth to a universal experience. We will all be the villain in someone else's story at some point in time. That part is inevitable. But we do not have to become the villain in our own story. We do not have to internalize what is not ours to carry.

You get to decide who you are.

The Power of Perception vs. the Truth of Identity

People will see you through the lens of their own experiences, trauma, and insecurities. Sometimes, they hold on to older versions of you because that’s the only version that fits their narrative. Other times, they project their own pain onto you as a way to feel better about themselves. It can be painful. But it does not have to define you.

The truth is, your identity is not a consensus. It’s not something you outsource to others for validation. It is a declaration you make for yourself. And every time you choose to stand in that truth, you reclaim your identity. Nourishment isn’t just a green smoothie or a good night’s sleep (though those help!). It’s anything that refills your spirit after being drained.

Energetic Sovereignty and the Gift of Reiki

After reading that message and feeling its emotional weight, I stepped into the shower and imagined all of the energy that didn’t belong to me rinsing away. I visualized the perception that had been placed on me falling off my body and going down the drain.

Then, I stood in front of the mirror and gave myself Reiki. I placed my hands on my heart and my womb, breathing deeply into both spaces. I allowed the universal life force to move through me, not just as a healing balm but as a reminder of my energetic sovereignty.

Energetic sovereignty means that you, and only you, are in charge of your energy, your spirit, your truth. You do not have to explain or defend yourself to people who have chosen to misunderstand you. You do not have to shrink, perform, or prove anything to feel worthy of love or belonging.

When you practice Reiki on yourself or receive it from a trusted practitioner, you are not only balancing your chakras or reducing stress. You are affirming that your energy belongs to you and that you have the power to realign and restore it.

Let go of the need to convince.

We often think if we just say the right thing, do the right thing, or explain ourselves well enough, people will understand. But sometimes, understanding is not the goal. Control is. And when people cannot control how you show up, they try to control how others see you.

That is not your burden to carry.

When you find yourself in a situation like mine, ask yourself: Is this about truth or control? Am I being called to defend or to remember? The distinction matters.

You can choose to rise, not react. You can choose to bow out gracefully instead of fueling the fire.

I have accepted that there are people in my life who have very different ways of seeing and doing things. That may never change. But the way I respond can. And that shift alone changes everything.

Mirror Work to Reclaim Your Identity

Mirror work is the intentional practice of speaking to yourself out loud while looking into your own eyes. It helps you reconnect with your truth, rewire limiting beliefs, and call your energy back from outside opinions or false narratives. It’s a sacred practice of reclaiming the power of your own reflection.

Try this when you’re ready to come home to yourself:

Stand in front of a mirror, take a few deep breaths, and place your hands on your heart or belly. Make eye contact with your reflection and say each of these questions out loud.

Answer honestly, let your voice carry your truth:

  1. Who am I beneath anyone else’s story about me?

  2. What am I still carrying that no longer belongs to the woman I’m becoming?

  3. What do I know about myself that no one else has the power to define?

Let your answers rise from within, not from fear or memory, but from your inner knowing. If any old stories surface, imagine them sliding off your body like water. Let the image of someone else’s version of you wash away, leaving only your truest essence.

You can take it deeper by placing one hand over your heart and the other just below your navel. Allow Reiki energy to flow through you, realigning your spirit and reestablishing your energetic boundaries. This is you stepping into your sovereignty.

Final Truths to Hold Onto

You are not here to be universally liked. You are here to be authentically you.

You are not here to be perfect. You are here to be whole.

You are not here to carry the projections of others. You are here to carry your purpose.

So when the opinions and assumptions come, remember who you are. And when that gets hard, go to the mirror, go to your breath, go to your soul.

You decide who you are. No one else gets to do that for you.

And if you need help remembering that truth, I see you.

I invite you to schedule a Soul Session on me. This deeply intuitive one-on-one experience blends mindset coaching, energy healing, and guided reflection to help you release what no longer serves you and realign with who you truly are.

Don't let someone else's opinion rewrite your truth!
